SLS SUMMER RUGBY ACADEMY

2013 COACHES' PROGRAM
JULY 9TH TO 12TH

INTRODUCTION BY JOHN TAIT

Having had the opportunity to be involved in coaching sessions with the young athletes at the SRA (Shawnigan Rugby Academy) over the past two summers, I am really excited to be leading the coaching portion of the 2013 camp. Shawnigan Academy offers a unique learning environment for both the athletes and the coaches attending it, no matter the level of experience. The camp is very interactive and relaxed which allows everyone ample opportunity to pursue areas of the game they want to know more about, I have learnt at least as much as I have given from the experience each time. The coaches not only get to talk rugby but actually are able to get involved in delivering a lot of what they learn or even share what they have with the athletes and other coaches in the camp.

I believe the coaches will come away not only with a better understanding of how to design and facilitate best practice to develop their own athletes and teams but they will also leave the camp with a new network of coaching resources that will assist them well into the future. One area in particular I am looking forward to sharing, is breaking down fundamental core skills. I have spent a lot of time developing training plans over the last several years to improve catch and pass; tackle technique, and spacial awareness, all crucial to individual and team successes. No matter what the level of athlete, newbie or national team, it is vital for coaches to not only be able to facilitate training drills to improve the core skills but also be able to help the athletes understand the importance of improving them continually.

I look forward to another great experience again this summer and working alongside all of the dedicated coaches out there building better rugby athletes across Canada.
